How to Make Cannabutter: Easy Starter Recipe

Making your own canna butter at home can be a fun and rewarding experience, allowing you to create your own edibles with just a few simple ingredients. While it can be done with basic kitchen utensils, it does take a little patience and care to ensure your butter turns out just right. Below is an easy recipe for making traditional canna butter using regular butter, with a substitution option for coconut oil if you prefer. By the end of this recipe, you’ll have a delicious batch of canna butter that can be used in a variety of homemade edibles.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter

  • 1/2 to 1 cup (14-28 grams) of decarboxylated cannabis (ground finely)

  • A small saucepan or double boiler

  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer

  • A storage container (such as a glass jar or airtight container)

  • Water

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Decarboxylate Your Cannabis

Before infusing your cannabis into butter, you need to decarboxylate it. This step activates the THC, which is essential for the effects of your canna butter. Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C). Spread your ground cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning. Afterward, remove it from the oven and let it cool.

2. Melt Your Butter

Place your butter in a small saucepan or double boiler over low heat. Stir occasionally to ensure it melts evenly and doesn’t burn. You want to keep the heat low and steady throughout the process.

3. Add Cannabis to Butter

Once the butter is melted, add your decarboxylated cannabis to the pot. Stir the mixture well to ensure that the cannabis is evenly distributed throughout the butter. Keep the heat low and let it simmer for about 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Be sure to keep an eye on the temperature, ensuring it stays around 160-180°F (70-80°C). Avoid letting it boil.

4. Strain the Butter

After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool for a few minutes. Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth or use a nut milk bag, and place it over your storage container. Pour the butter and cannabis mixture through the strainer to remove the plant material. Press the remaining cannabis to extract as much butter as possible.

5. Store Your Canna Butter

Once the butter is strained, transfer it to a storage container and let it cool. Once it has cooled to room temperature, place it in the fridge to solidify. Your canna butter is now ready to use in your favourite edibles.

Substitution: Coconut Oil Option

If you prefer to use coconut oil instead of butter, you can substitute the same amount of coconut oil for butter in this recipe. Coconut oil is a great alternative, especially for vegan recipes or if you want a slightly different flavour profile. Follow the same steps as above, simply swapping the butter for coconut oil. Keep in mind that the consistency and taste will be different, but the potency will remain the same.

Why Make Canna Butter at Home?

Making your own canna butter gives you control over the potency, and you can easily adjust the recipe to suit your needs. It’s also a cost-effective way to create edibles, especially if you have access to a good supply of cannabis.

However, while it’s definitely possible to make cannabutter with basic utensils, it can be a time-consuming process. Canna butter machines are a much easier option, offering precise control over temperature and infusion time. These machines automate the process, ensuring that you get perfectly infused butter every time, without the hassle of constant stirring and temperature monitoring.
